DON'T STRESS OVER THE DREADED COLD & CANKER SORES

Nobody likes to talk about either, but the fact remains they are both very common nuisances.

It never fails, anytime you have a big event approaching, you develop an unsightly cold sore also known as (fever blister) on your lip.  They start out with a tiny cluster of harmless looking blisters then explode into a painful sore.  Cold sores are the most common virus for millions of Americans.  They usually occur on the outside of the mouth, near the nose or lips and may last 7-10 days.  A cold sore is contagious because it is caused by the herpes simplex virus, and it is usually painful and filled with fluid. There is no cure, as they lie dormant in certain nerve cells of the body until activated by stress, anxiety, a cold or excessive sun exposure.

Unlike cold sores, canker sores are not contagious but can be painful and make eating and talking difficult at times. They can appear on the delicate tissues inside your mouth or on the tongue.  Most go away on their own within 1-2 weeks.  Check with Dr. Martin if they are unusually large or painful and they do not heal.  He may want to prescribe a paste or rinse for you.  Over the counter pastes can help relieve the pain and speed healing if applied as soon as they appear.
