Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers help re-create the appearance of your natural teeth with a thin layer of porcelain. Dr. Martin at The Martin Dental Center For Oral Health and Aesthetics custom-fits each veneer to the individual teeth in your mouth, then bonds the veneers to your existing teeth. Veneers cover up imperfections such as misshapen teeth, stains, cracks, or gaps. They can also restore frail teeth.

Veneers can be made from composite resin or porcelain. Porcelain is the most stain-resistant material out of the two materials. Porcelain also tends to match your natural enamel better. A member of the qualified dental team presents your options and helps you select the best type of veneers for your needs.

How do I get veneers?

The process begins with a consultation to discuss your goals and determine the best type of veneers for your needs, after which you come back for another appointment. Then, your existing teeth are shaped to prepare them for the veneers by removing a tiny amount of enamel from the surface. Once your teeth are prepped, a mold of your teeth is taken to create your individualized veneers in the dental lab.

When the veneers arrive from the lab, you return to the office and have them custom-fitted to each of your teeth. After cleaning and etching the surface of your teeth to prepare them for the bonding process, a special cement is applied and a light source that causes the adhesive to bond securely to the porcelain. In a relatively short amount of time, your veneers are permanently in place, and you have a new and improved smile.

What are the benefits of veneers?

Veneers provide a natural-looking way to correct crooked, cracked, or misshapen teeth. Also, they provide the following benefits:

  • Stain resistance
  • Well-tolerated by your gums
  • Can lighten darker teeth
  • Look great with minimal dental work
  • Strengthen teeth
  • More cost-effective than other dental solutions like crowns
